MAYVILLE - SPC Michael J. Wendling, 20, of W2419 Allen Road, Mayville, lost his life on Monday, Sept. 26, 2005, in service to his country in Iraq.


SPC Michael J. Wendling was born on Jan. 3,

1985, at St. Agnes Hospital, Fond du Lac. He was baptized on that same day. His baptism was reaffirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church on March 3, 1985. He is the youngest of four children of Randall and Carrie Wendling.


Michael attended pre-school and kindergarten at St. John Lutheran School, Mayville. He attended Immanuel Lutheran School in the town of Theresa. He was active in many sports during those years. Michael renewed his baptismal vows at his Confirmation on May 2, 1999, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in the town of Theresa. Michael's confirmation verse was 'Then Jesus said to those which believed on him "If you continue in my word, then you are my disciple indeed. And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make your free." John 8:31 & 32.

Michael attended Mayville High School. He was a member of the DECA Club. He participated in football, basketball, baseball and golf. He graduated in June 2003. He enlisted in the Army National Guard while in high school at the age of 17. He was a student at UW-Milwaukee until he was called up to active duty in May 2005. Michael served in the Wisconsin Army National Guard, Co. C, 2nd Battalion, 127th Infantry, 32nd Infantry Brigade, Wisconsin Army National Guard, Fond du Lac, WI. He was killed Sept. 26 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee and his convoy was attacked with small-arms fire in Shaibah, Iraq.
